Dermal Fillers Revision

What are dermal fillers? If I don’t like the treatment results, can it be corrected or revised?

Dermal fillers are composed of a stabilized form of hyaluronic acid (HA) that work to restore volume or “fullness” in facial features and reduce fine or deep lines, fill out hollows in the cheeks, under the eyes, temple, lips, and forehead.

Popular brands of dermal fillers include Restylane®, Restylane® Lyft, Juvederm®, Voluma®, and Belotero®. Dermal fillers work by mimicking your body’s own hyaluronic acid, providing volume and fullness, while gradually diminishing over time.

Most dermal fillers last between 6-12 months or longer, depending on the facial area in which they are placed. Fillers placed in the lips tend to last an average of 6 months or so, while filler placed in the hands, under eye area or temple region can last up to a year or more.

Occasionally, the filler may be placed in the wrong location or in too great a quantity, making the appearance of the treated area appear distorted, puffy or misshapen. We often see patients referred to our office to revise and correct their filler results when the product has been placed by an inexperienced or inadequately trained provider.

If I need a revision treatment will I need to wait until the old dermal filler treatment has worn off?

Happily, dermal fillers are reversible, which adds to their appeal for those new to injectable facial rejuvenation treatments. If you do not like the outcome or placement of your dermal filler treatment it can be dissolved and placed in a more appropriate anatomical location. You do not need to wait until the previous filler has been resorbed to have a correction or revision procedure performed.

Always choose a highly qualified and trained provider for your dermal filler treatment.

Like with any surgical, or non-surgical facial rejuvenation procedure, dermal fillers must be applied by a fully qualified and trained aesthetic professional. In fact, the successful outcome of your dermal filler treatment will be directly in relation the skill and precision of your provider’s injection technique. Additionally, the safety of fillers is greatly increased if the aesthetic professional is practicing under the current consensus guidelines provided by professional Plastic Surgery and Dermatology associations.
