What is Kybella® and how does it work?
Kybella® is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring molecule in the body called deoxycholic acid – a molecule that aids in the breakdown of fat. Specifically targeted to submental fullness — the fat beneath the chin — Kybella® is injected under the skin where it destroys fat cells and essentially “melts” away excess fat.
Who is the ideal candidate for Kybella® treatment?
Kybella® is ideal for those seeking a relatively painless, non-surgical, injectable treatment for submental fullness AKA a “double chin”. Ideal candidates are people in their 20’s, 30’s, and possibly early 40’s. If you are older than mid-40’s Kybella® may not be the best choice for you to get the desired result and you may want to consider a neck lift or liposuction.
Is the treatment experience painful?
At each session you will receive a series of multiple small injections under your chin that are relatively painless. The actual treatment experience will take about 10 minutes or less, and is similar to the application of Botox® injections. Immediately after your Kybella® injections you may experience a mild stinging or burning sensation but you will be given a cool pack to relieve any discomfort. Kybella® injections can be quickly administered during a short visit to our San Francisco office. Plan to be at our office for about an hour or so to allow for pre-treatment preparation.
Is it safe? Are there any side effects?
Kybella® has been approved as a safe treatment for excess fat below the chin. Overall, the treatment is very safe with typically only very mild side effects including temporary swelling for 3-4 days. You will be able to return to work immediately after the treatment session with no ill effects.
How many treatments are needed to reduce a “double chin”?
The great benefit of Kybella® is that you can reduce your double chin fat until you get the desired result. Depending on your goals, our specialist will recommend a number of treatments as part of your treatment plan. Typically most people undertake 3 treatment sessions spaced about a month apart, however you will notice significant results within 2 treatments. Because Kybella® permanently removes the fat cells under the chin, the results of treatment will last for years.
