We’ve known about hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers since Restylane was FDA approved as the first HA filler in the United States in 2003. Since then, many HA fillers are currently used to provide volume, improve contour, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. 

Now, a new use for HA has recently been FDA approved for gradually improving skin hydration and plumpness. SkinVive is made of microdroplets of hyaluronic acid which are  injected superficially in the skin. Not to provide volume, but hydration. Hyaluronic Acid is a hydrophilic  (water-loving) molecule that is found naturally in our skin, eyes, and joints that both attracts water and provides hydration. As time goes on, we naturally have lower levels of HA in our skin, which can leave it looking dehydrated, making fine lines and wrinkles more pronounced. 

By injecting SkinVive into the skin, it boosts your natural HA levels, leaving the skin looking smoother, softer and more hydrated for several months. Our skin produces and breaks down our own natural free HA every few days. The HA molecules in SkinVive are crosslinked, like the molecules are “holding hands.” This makes it more difficult for your body to break down and allows the product to last longer in your skin. However, since it is so similar to your own natural HA, your skin and body recognize it as a natural substance. 

I have had success with injecting SkinVive “off-label” into the lips as a filler alternative for patients who wanted to revive and hydrate their lips without adding volume. I have also injected it into the hands for additional hydration and plumping of the skin. 

The face, neck, déclolletage and hands can be treated to improve hydration and skin elasticity, resulting in smoother skin. Generally, 1-2 treatment sessions are scheduled 4 weeks apart. The effects will be gradually noticeable after each treatment, with the most significant result after the last session. Maintenance treatments are recommended every 6 months.
